The word Patagonia conjures up visions of wildness, of distance, of big open country one could disappear into and never be found.  It paints images of dramatic peaks against stormy skies.  Of glaciers and waterfalls and wildlife that runs unchecked by fences and roads.  It sounds so wild – and so far away!

Patagonia Photography Adventure, a nature photography adventure designed for nature photographers by nature photographers

We’ve been there – and we’re hooked.  And it’s time you come along and get hooked too!

In March of 2012 we’ll gather a group of hearty photographers and explore this distant land, capturing images of scenery so big it’s almost hard to describe and animals that most people will never see in the wild.  What will we see?

Glaciers – so many that Patagonia is sometimes referred to as the “third pole”.  And, they’re approachable!  And amazingly big – and graphic!

Grand towering peaks – Los Torres del Paine!  Los Cuernos del Paine!  And more!  Scenery you just can’t stop composing!  And a sky as big as the scenery!

Condors – not just a distant dot in the sky but many of them – and close enough to create images!

Guanacos – the relatives of llamas that cover Patagonia in ever-present herds.

We’ve put together a photographic adventure designed around getting you to great places in great light – with time to work the scenes.

We’ll spend several days based near El Calafate in Southern Argentina, a city known as the capital of glaciers, on the edge of Los Glaciares National Park.

From there, we’ll explore the amazing Perito Moreno Glacier – which is pushing a three mile wide tongue into Lago Argentino – calving pieces of ice that are 20 stories tall.  We’ll photograph this incredible glacier from across the lake, from a boat that will get us close to the action, and from atop the glacier!  On another day we’ll visit several other glaciers by boat.

We’ll also explore El Chalten (the indigenous name for Mount Fitz Roy), an incredible area of peaks and glaciers and reflections in lakes.  This rugged terrain deserves your photographic attention!

Then we’ll cross into Chile to explore Torres del Paine National Park, named for the granite monoliths carved by glaciers that jut up into the dawn sky, catching morning light in a way that demands our presence with cameras!

You’ll have a hard time convincing friends back home that you didn’t artificially saturate dawn’s early light on the towers!

Exploring this area will unveil great opportunities to work with guanacos and condors.

We’ll find waterfalls,

And lakes that reflect majestic peaks,

And more dramatic scenery that just demands our photographic attention.

After our stay at Torres del Paine, we’ll slip even further south to the edge of the Straits of Magellan.  There we'll visit and photograph in a reserve filled with Magellanic penguins - right on the edge of the straits!
