Yellowstone in winter is a photographer's paradise and we will once again lead Xanterra's Yellowstone Fire and Ice Winter Photography Tour, an adventure designed to maximize nature photography opportunities - with a focus on wildlife, winter, and the thermal features that make Yellowstone famous.  Crystalline snow sparkles in the winter sun as a foreground to magnificent waterfalls, steamy geysers, and stately wildlife.  Hoar and rime frost line trees and shrubs near many of the hot pools.

Bison wander the valleys and geyser basins.  And there are many fewer people in the park.  We love the photographic opportunities and the sense of adventure of traveling in snow coaches.

Join a small group of avid photographers and nature buffs as we slip into snow coaches and enter the magical world of Yellowstone in the winter.  We’ll travel over the snow on Yellowstone’s roads in Xanterra's newest snow coaches to see wildlife such as elk, bison, eagles, and coyotes.  We will be guided by Xanterra's licensed and permitted guides who are both skilled at getting us through the challenges of winter and teaching us about the natural history of the park.

We’ll visit geyser basins covered with snow and ice to watch eruptions and marvel at beautiful hot springs.

We’ll peer into canyons at Yellowstone’s magnificent
waterfalls, cascading among snow and ice.

Nights will be spent in Yellowstone National Park lodges at Old Faithful and Mammoth Hot Springs – talking photography and recounting the adventures.

Winter can create varied light conditions – from bright direct sun to heavy overcast with falling snow.  We’ve endured bitter cold and heavy snow.  But the reward has always been some breathtaking moments when you can’t possibly make pictures as fast as your eyes find them.

The basic itinerary for the Fire and Ice program calls for the first two nights at Mammoth Hot Springs, then three nights at Snow Lodge (next to Old faithful), and then back to Mammoth for another two.  The January 13-20 Adventure will deviate slightly from this schedule.

Travel into the park’s interior will be by snow coach.  We will also venture into the Lamar Valley to photograph wildlife in conventional vans.

Xanterra has worked out a voucher system for meals (breakfasts and lunches).  Some dinners included.

The program includes an opening night presentation on the challenges of winter photography in Yellowstone.  It will also include an evening of illustrated lectures on photographic technique.

  • Cost per person (2012):

Single Occupancy $3,355.00 + tax and fees
Double Occupancy $2,979.00 + tax and fees

  • The workshop will begin and end in Mammoth Hot Springs, WY
  • Cost includes all lodging, guided outings, van transportation, service charges.
  • Cost includes round group trip transportation from the Bozeman, MT airport (you'll need to arrange your arrival time to meet a schedule). You can also drive directly to Mammoth Hot Springs from the North (roads are kept open year round)
Cost includes breakfasts and lunches (voucher card), some dinners on your own
  • Participants must be in good health, capable of walking and carrying photo gear over ice and through snow, and be willing to try new things.
  • Minimum enrollment = 6
  • Maximum enrollment = 14
  • To reserve your space or join a waitlist in case vacancies develop, please fill out this form
We ask that you be serious about your commitment to attend the program when you fill out the form.

We’ll use our photographic experience in Yellowstone and that of our dedicated guide and snow coach driver to pick each day’s itinerary and strategize how to deal with the weather and light conditions.

What makes our
Yellowstone Winter Photography Adventure better?

  • We lodge inside Yellowstone so that we can maximize our time photographing - and spend less time going in and out of the park.
  • We have 1 photographer guide and 1 interpretive guide for each snow coach - and a maximum of 7 participants in each coach.
  • We have been photographing Yellowstone professionally for more than 20 years - in all seasons - and we know what works, where, in each weather situation.
  • We follow a flexible schedule - seizing the opportunities presented by weather and wildlife action.
  • We balance our photography time among wildlife, waterfalls, thermal features, and winter scenery/landscapes.

A complete preparation mailing will be sent to those who sign up for the program.
