Yellowstone in winter is a photographer's paradise and our Yellowstone Fire and Ice Winter Photography Adventure is designed to maximize your nature photography opportunities.  Crystalline snow sparkles in the winter sun as a foreground to magnificent waterfalls, steamy geysers, and stately wildlife.  Hoar and rime frost line trees and shrubs near many of the hot pools.

Bison wander the valleys and geyser basins.  And there are many fewer people in the park.  We love the photographic opportunities and the sense of adventure of traveling in snow coaches.

Join a small group of avid photographers and nature buffs as we slip into snow coaches and enter the magical world of Yellowstone in the winter.  We’ll travel over the snow on Yellowstone’s roads to see wildlife such as elk, bison, eagles, and coyotes.

We’ll visit geyser basins covered with snow and ice to watch eruptions and marvel at beautiful hot springs.

We’ll peer into canyons at Yellowstone’s magnificent
waterfalls, cascading among snow and ice.

Nights will be spent in Yellowstone National Park lodges at Old Faithful and Mammoth Hot Springs – talking photography and recounting the adventures.

Winter can create varied light conditions – from bright direct sun to heavy overcast with falling snow.  We’ve endured bitter cold and heavy snow.  But the reward has always been some breathtaking moments when you can’t possibly make pictures as fast as your eyes find them.

The basic itinerary for our program calls for the first two nights at Mammoth Hot Springs, then three nights at Snow Lodge (next to Old faithful), and then back to Mammoth for another two.  Travel into the park’s interior will be by snow coach.  We will also venture into the Lamar Valley to photograph wildlife in conventional vans.

We’ve worked out a voucher system for meals (breakfasts and lunches) – to give you the greatest flexibility.  (Dinner will be on your own except for three nights when the group will meet and eat.)  You’ll also be provided Xanterra’s popular Snow Card, which is good for 10% off meals, gifts and other Xanterra services.

The program will include an opening night presentation on the issues and challenges of winter photography in Yellowstone.  It will also include an evening of illustrated lectures on photographic technique specific to the challenges of capturing images in Yellowstone's dramatic winter landscape.
