Galapagos Photography Adventure

Post 2 – Galapagos Islands Scenery – You could say the islands are vast and unique; some with volcanoes, lava fields, and cactus.  Some are lush and green.  Some have caves. Others are barely visible from a distance because they are so flat.  And then there are rocks that are vertical monuments.

Post 1 – Galapagos Islands Special Wildlife Encounters

With every landing, every boat outing, every snorkel… surprises await us.  At any moment, we can get a glimpse of something flying by or swimming by.  And then there are the special actions and expressions that we don’t want to miss.  It is important to be ready to capture those moments.

The light is low and golden, great time for capturing wildlife. It takes careful positioning of our zodiac to get us in just the right place for dramatic light and a good background.

Patagonia Photography Adventure

When I think of Patagonia, the words “vast” and “mood” come to mind.  The landscape changes constantly, clouds move and reveal peaks that were hidden moments before…  Light breaks through and highlights parts of the scene… All good things to create drama and art in the landscape.

The quiet of the mountains in the many moods they present us, leaves us as we explore the Perito Moreno Glacier…

Yellowstone Winter Photography Safari

As time went on, animal behavior changed.  Lower temps and snowfall made for some dramatic scenes.

The snow was falling so hard, the 3 light colored wolves were barely visible.  This one came back for a little more food and then we watched them disappear into the whiteout like ghosts.  It was very special just to watch this action.  The coyotes and bobcats like to walk along the riverside, hoping for a duck, swan or rodent to catch for dinner.

OK! I think it is about time to leave.  I won’t argue with him!  (oh how I love my long lens and safety of being inside a vehicle with the window open) We’ve had enough of the snow anyway and it is time to fly south.

So here we go… We will arrive in Costa Rica tomorrow night and do look for some photos on the next blog in a week or so.  We’ll try to warm you up a bit with some hummingbirds and flowers after all of this snow and ice.

Clear and cold conditions are what is needed for rime ice to form, much to the nature photographer’s delight.  Each warm day that follows melts the ice away and the next cold spell makes new designs to play with.

Turkey Scout Trip

In early November, we traveled to Turkey to explore and celebrate so many opportunities for the photographer – land rich in history, culture, and geology.

Cappadocia, Turkey is a region rich with remains of ancient civilizations and geology.  For thousands of years, people have come and gone, leaving their presence on the landscape.  For us, it is a time to create art.  And the best tool to do this is light.

Alone in a quiet space, we wonder about the people who were here before us and how they lived.  There are so many tunnels and stairs, windows and doorways – we love to capture the way the light bounces around and adds depth.

Management of light can determine the feeling of a place, and dramatic or soft, you can choose how much detail to show.

We really enjoyed exploring new places and determining what time of day would be the best for each location.  What sites work best in soft light, what sites work best during those dramatic moments, and how to capture the feeling of all that is there is important to creative photography.  The gift of “seeing” as we photographers do, enable us to take so much more in than just being there for a quick look and a history lesson. Interpretation from a good guide also helps us see more imaginatively.

We hope you will join us on one of our Turkey Photography Adventures in the future.  Cappadocia is just a sample of our itinerary, but worthy of several days.

Yellowstone and Grand Teton Fall Photography Safari

Part 4, Grand Teton National Park

There is a magic hour at Oxbow Bend.  All is quiet except for distant elk bugles – photographers set up cameras on tripods with only occasional soft conversations. It is cold, still, and the light changes with every passing moment.  We give the group a starting point for exposures and then photograph for about an hour.

Botswana Photography Safari

This will be our 3rd and final post for our Botswana safari.  We began our Grand Teton/Yellowstone program tonight – look for posts from here in the next few days.

Be sure and start the Botswana Safari post from the beginning if you are just joining now.  I will end with a few thoughts about the experiences we came home with.  We felt so calm and peaceful there, the animals behave so differently away from lots of human activity. We could take our time and enjoy watching them without feeling we were intruding.
